Module 1 essentially introduces us to the idea that quality information resources need to be carefully and systematically described. Standardised processes in cataloguing items allow information seekers to locate relevant information easily. How these records are recorded must support user needs through the FRBR tasks (Functional Requirement for Bibliographic Records) of:

  • Finding
  • identifying
  • selecting
  • obtaining
  • exploring (Hider, 2018. p. 29)

Cataloguing specialists create standardised metadata in library catalogues to store information about items in order for the resources to be easily retrieved by library users. SCIS (Schools Cataloguing and Information Service) was set up to centralise cataloguing specifically for schools. This catalogue has an educational focus, quality records added by specialist metadata librarians, in depth subject headings, summaries specifically for schools and consistency of data records.

Module 2 focuses on the tools used to organise and store library information.  Which elements of a resource are most useful in allowing simple, effective retrieval and how these tools work and communicate with each other – interoperability. Information tools in libraries, archives or museums have similarities in their bibliographic descriptions or metadata.
