July 30 Introductory forum post.
Hi there, I am excited to finally be on board with this subject. I spent the first week volunteering at the Birdsville Big Red Bash. It’s an amazing experience combining camping (totally roughing it) with Australian music. It packed a unique experience of the Simpson Desert I’ll never forget. I hit the ground running when we got back with casual days offered plus mountains of washing to get through.
I am halfway through my degree and loving learning! Last session I realized I desperately needed library experience to put my learning into practice, so I volunteered at a school library. It was a great way to get my “foot in the door” and I was offered library casual days as a result. I was a sponge soaking up everything I could learn. I loved every day I was offered and it never felt like “work”. I discovered how important it is to get to know the staff members you are working with and understand everyones role, strengths and weaknesses. I see this as an important area of the TL as a leader, cultivating a positive work environment in the library that empowers others.
I know I have a lot more learning and growing to do in this course and this subject certainly will be a big stretch for me, like many here I don’t see myself as a big up the front leader. Just as learning is a lifelong journey, I believe learning to lead takes a lifetime to master as well. I wish everyone all the best! Jenn 🙂
