Online Reflective Journal Blog Task 1

Looking @ Learning Environments

  • describe a problem learning space that is not serving the learning purpose for which it was intended (100 words);
  • explain, referencing some of the subject reading, why that space might benefit from some thinking on its design (300 words).
  • describe the changes, however small, you make to that space as a result, in order to attempt to create a better space for learning (up to 200 words); and
  • after the submission date, leave a comment on at least three other students’ blog posts, with a suggestion for an improvement, based on your reading (provide reference(s)). Post a link to each of your feedback comments under your own post in the week following your initial submission.

Module 1 – Designed for a Purpose

Designed for a purpose – Travelling to the airport on regular occasions it has been evident to me that there are constant road works being done to Western Ring Road and also to areas in high density residential areas. Having complained many a time about the hold ups and the inconvenience caused by ‘road works’, this task has made me reflect and realise design purposes for roads and infrastructure that is put into place in growing and developing areas.

Living and working in one of the fastest growing areas in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, the main arterial road (Plenty road) was originally designed and developed to service a small population. This has since soared and has become a booming area with high density housing and vehicle traffic. It is evident that public transport and road infrastructure is insufficient for the demand and there for town planners and designers have been working to develop improved roads and add extra train stations. This begun with the extension of the Epping line to South Morang and works have started for three additional stations extending into the suburb of Mernda.

Designers have planned for and designed train stations to cater for needs, for example; Hawkstowe station has been designed to reduce traffic pressure on Plenty road and cater for the catholic secondary college in the area. Knowing that this station will predominantly cater for secondary students, spaces have been provided for students to sit, study and wait for their transport home. Roads in the area are being extended and extra lanes are being added. These spaces have been implemented due to need and refined and developed with the intent to maximise the use of this space.

Welcome to Yoong’s Learning Blog!

During my Designing Learning Spaces Journey, I will use this Blog Space to share my thoughts and learning. I am excited to share learning with you all and look forward to collaborating with others in this course over the session.

I am new to the Masters of Education – Knowledge Networks and Digital Innovation and this is my fist subject in the course! I am very excited to embark on this learning journey and have a hunger for furthering my own personal learning and knowledge. For the past 5 years (and in 2 schools) I have been a Leading Teacher in Melbourne Victoria in the area of Digital Technology which has a coaching component from years Foundation to 6. I also co-ordinate LOTE – Chinese for the School which is taught by both classroom teachers and by Chinese tutors located in China through video conferencing.
