Five Year Plan

Take the time to reflect on the content covered in this subject. Where will you be in five years time and how do you plan on getting there? What are some of the strategies you will put in place now to ensure a future career in school librarianship?

In five years time I would like to be a permeant, highly accomplished teacher-librarian running a successful library team and library environment that fosters inquiry-based learning and is technology rich.

Year 1 –

  • Finish my Master of Education in Teacher-Librarianship.
  • Situate myself within a school or secure a TL position.
  • Align the library’s strategic focus within the schools strategic focus.
  • Join school leadership teams and actively contribute.
  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the current library program.
  • Strengthen peer relationships.
  • Be visible within the community.
  • Begin developing my administration skills.
  • Undertake professional development in 21st century literacies, technology, coding etc
  • Review the year, to inform future changes.

Year 2 –

  • Invest in the community.
  • Supply professional development for my team.
  • Continue to undertake professional development, sharing my skills and knowledge with others.
  • Join Teacher Librarian and Library communities, to build a larger library community.
  • Develop new policies and procedures.
  • Continue to actively contribute to school leadership teams.
  • Continue to develop my administration skills.
  • Implement an inquiry-based scope and sequence.
  • Begin collaboration with teachers.
  • Review the year, to inform future changes.

Year 3 –

  • Strengthen and create new community links – book fairs, training evenings, book reads, author visits.
  • Supply professional development for my team.
  • Become and instructional leader by continuing to pursue research and professional development.
  • Continue to actively contribute to school leadership teams.
  • Encourage others to implement inquiry-based learning.
  • Change the library environment to be flexible and engaging.
  • Continue to undertake professional development, sharing my skills and knowledge with others.
  • Introduce maker spaces.
  • Continue to develop my administration skills.
  • Continue to collaborate with teachers, supporting them with the programming and teaching.
  • Review the year, to inform future changes.

Year 4 –

  • Advocate for authentic learning environments.
  • Continue to collaborate with teachers to deepen learning, encouraging them to create technology rich experiences.
  • Implement new learning projects that supports classroom learning.
  • Continuously meet with staff to discuss curriculum and data, and how the library can assist in developing these further.
  • Continue to undertake professional development, sharing my skills and knowledge with others.
  • Begin collecting evidence for my HAT.
  • Update my administration skills.
  • Supply professional development for my team.
  • Review the year, to inform future changes.

Year 5 –

  • Supply professional development for my team.
  • Review the effects of staff collaboration, inquiry learning and flexible learning environments.
  • Research and Analyse new pedagogical approaches.
  • Instructionally support staff.
  • Establish myself within the school as an important and valuable leader (informed by evidence and data collection).
  • Apply for HAT.
  • Review the year, to inform future changes.
