My Definition of Children’s Literature

Before doing any reading, I would say that children’s literature is any text that is written specifically for children. Looking into the background of children’s literature I see that texts do not have to be written specifically for children for them to be of interest to children. So upon further research I would add that children’s literature is any text (digital or otherwise) that is accessible to and enjoyed by children. As we have see from the many studies of children worldwide as readers, it is not so important what children read, but that they do willingly read. The importance in reading for pleasure and the fact that in order to find reading pleasurable children need to have choice in what they read should lead us to have a very open mind regarding what constitutes children’s literature. Once words (on paper or on a screen) manage to pull a child into the world of reading, he or she will be hooked into a wonderful and life-affirming habit.
