Having worked in both schools and the corporate world, I believe the best way to approach reluctant teachers, is with a customer service mentality. The library is there to provide assistance to teachers, in whatever way possible. In time, trust would build, allowing for further collaboration and a strengthened partnership. Regular emails or newsletters to department heads and teachers would highlight resources available or ideas for collaboration. The goal would be for teachers to view the TL as a valuable resource. Participation in school meetings would also help, as would surveys determining the needs of teachers at that time. Regular contact would ensure the TL knows which units are being studied and conversation regarding collaboration.
It is essential for everyone to be on board. The principal must value the role of the TL, as this sets into motion the flow of resources, budget and attitude from the top. From my reading, it is also important that subject areas do not work alone, working together as departments and across the school in regards to information literacy skills would be most beneficial for students. There is much to be gained from collaboration – especially in a time of constant change, technological demands and 21st century skills that students need to master.
