Teacher Librarians and School Libraries Endangered Species?

Bonanno (2011) suggests that it is not school libraries that are an endangered species instead it is the way you look at the role that is endangered. The key point to her 2011 address was that the approaches we take as TLs to the role in schools is key to the longevity of school libraries and the teacher librarian. As we move further into the online information world the TLs role becomes more ITC based. This has positive connotations for students and the Library provided the TL and school view it in a positive manner. Continual professional development can continue to strengthen the role of TLs in the school as the relevant learning is applied in the school context. It is not just classroom teachers that need to complete professional development, the changing nature of information requires TLs to remain current and up to date with the information world and provide support to classroom teachers and students in accessing this through enhancing their digital literacy.
