The CSU Master of Education: Teacher Librarianship is a fully online program which enables accredited teachers to become qualified teacher librarians. The course consists of 6 core subjects and 2 electives which participants usually complete within two years, studying at a part-time rate.
This course enables teachers to become uniquely qualified in both education and librarianship. It combines up-to-date curriculum knowledge and teaching strategy with library and information management expertise. Participants learn how to evaluate, support and improve student learning and teaching needs in modern learning environments, and incorporate information literacy, literacy learning outcomes and digital technologies into the curriculum.
Each subject in the course is designed to build participants’ capabilities across the diverse functions of the teacher librarian role. All participants begin by completing ETL401 Introduction to Teacher Librarianship, which introduces the key roles of the Teacher Librarian as identified by the Australian Library and Information Association [ALIA] and the Australian School Library Association [ASLA] in the Statement on Teacher Librarians in Australia (2016). These roles are:
- learning and teaching;
- management;
- leadership and collaboration; and
- community engagement.
It does so with a particular focus on the school library as an information-rich learning centre in the school and the teacher librarian as the school’s leading information specialist.
Students also undertake supervised workplace experiences, study visits and complete a reflective portfolio as a capstone experience when they complete ETL512 Professional Experience and Portfolio. The remaining 4 core subjects explore resourcing the curriculum, describing and analysing education resources, research in practice and the teacher librarian as leader. Students may choose from a range of electives that further explore children’s and young adult literature, the information environment, digital citizenship, records management and social networking.
We continually update and enhance the course to ensure we offer up to date resourcing and information, as well as creative and meaningful online learning experiences. The development of podcasts is the next step in our plan to provide authentic learning experiences that connect theory with practice.
