Before commencing this subject, I did have some experience in marketing in a previous position of employment, however, I can confidently say that INF206 has been extremely insightful and helpful in broadening my abilities to use such a powerful platform. Through the rapid and ever-changing impact of social media, it has truly become part of our everyday lives. Social media platforms are a thriving space for the marketing industry through its ability to reach consumers on a personal level. The Network system allows businesses to share and distribute ideas and products, however, it also has the ability to source a form of feedback from individuals across the platform. This is truly invaluable for a business trying to build its image within the community and their ultimate success in the industry. Prior to undertaking this subject, I considered social media a platform for individuals to connect and share with friends and family, however, I’ve had truly been enlightened and can the great need to implement this form of marketing into an organisation.
My journey of enlightenment of the power of social networking began with joining the Facebook group where we were able to share and obtain information throughout our studies. I found this exercise very enabling and informative as we were able to reflect on each other’s findings and ultimately seek the best outcome as a group. Unfortunately, due to many other demands I have had to deal with over the journey of this subject, I was not able to spend a lot of time using this source to its greatest potential. However through the exploration of the group later in the subject, I discovered the great potential and invaluable information and support this group provided.
Throughout the subject we have reflected on many platforms that social media offer provided from the modules. From this, it became evident that there are many social media platforms suitable for information professionals and businesses alike that I was not aware of. These sources allowed me to further enhance my studies and evaluate the implantation of many social networking tools. Throughout the course I found that I applied my newfound awareness of the benefits of social media tools and joined numerous Facebook groups and even created a LinkedIn profile.
Working through the modules I was introduced to WordPress, a platform that allows individuals to create a space and share ideas and concepts with users. This was a very beneficial and enlightening source that I was able to apply to another subject I am currently undertaking. Maxwell, L. (2019) suggests that blogging can act as a professional source and resume that will assist in tracking and monitoring professional development. The introduction to this social media tool I feel will not only further my knowledge on the platform but allow me to use this direct in my professional career. In addition, we have been able to reflect on the concept of Library 2.0 and its impact on information professionals both emerging librarians new to the field and existing.
Working on module 5, I discovered that there are simultaneously potential risks and issues one can face through implementing social media and the true impact this may have on our society. The little precautions and consequences in place within the online community, unfortunately, enables and empowers individuals to distribute false news and information. Iosifidis, P., & Nicoli, N. (2019) confirms that there is little examination into overseeing social media and the consequences of spreading fake news. Unfortunately, this has become a reoccurring issue with the social media space as software development can make false information and imagery impossible to spot. As an information professional it is important to understand that social media is not a true source of reliable and valid information. As an educator I feel it is an information professional’s responsibility to share this notion and to implement these ideas with children of a young age. This can determine whether social media is a worthy platform for children as they will need to be aware of the risks and know how to handle such situations. As an information professional it is essential we educate members of the community to source valuable means of information to improve the way information is shared and further amplify the invaluable need for library services.
Social networking, although an extremely influential space with a large number of applications and opportunities, where individuals can share and communicate, through this module I have found there to be some issues facing this technology that I have now acknowledged. Although social networking platform have policies in place, it is evident that ethics and negative online behaviours are not enforced with real consequences. Ultimately this allows individuals to distribute false claims creating great impacts on organisations and even individuals through online harassment and bullying. After exploring this module I truly have considered the impact social media has on society and how we distribute and attain information. As a future information professional I feel it is detrimental to be aware of the consequences of these platforms to ensure young members of the community can be educated to overcome these issues.
Constructing and contributing to my OLJ has been a great way to focus my thoughts and explore the implications of social networking when applied to organisations, the information profession, and how this has ultimately shaped our society in the Web 2.0 world. The ability to truly reflect on the readings provided every week has been detrimental to my understanding of the subject content and in the way I have been able to implant my new learnings into my current employment position. My online journal was a great tool in helping me to process and analyse the course content and to implement my learnings to my personal social media networking spaces. The individual tasks gave me the ability to truly reflect on the readings and navigate my interests in certain social media platforms. I found that I did quite enjoy undertaking these tasks regularly throughout the duration of the subject and as there were so many tasks to select from I was able to navigate tasks that I was truly interested in. Ultimately this task was very beneficial to my overall understanding and ability to implement these ideas into my future career as an information professional and in my current use of social media by developing these spaces and implementing new platforms.
At the completion of this subject I feel that I have gained invaluable subject content that I will certainly apply to my career as an information professional in the Web 2.0 world. Technology is always growing and changing, and it is imperative that as information professionals we are always educating ourselves to meet the ever-changing demands of library users. I have found this subject to be greatly beneficial and relevant to my future career in information and even in my current position working with an online store. Social media is such a valuable platform and I have certainly been guided through a large array of many tools I was not aware of and can now transfer to my work content. Consequently to completing this subject I feel I have gained great insight and confidence in achieving a position as a Librarian 2.0.
