Project Title: Cyber Security: Trends, Issues and Challenges

Abstract:

Problem domain:  Information technology has evolved, and will continue to evolve. We live in a world that is being powered by information technology. It keeps us going in both our personal and professional ventures. Information technology has changed the way we think, communicate and operate in today’s environment. It was made possible by the myriad benefit provided by connectivity. But, Like Pablo Picaso once said “Every positive value has its price in negative terms”, information technology is not different. Besides the myriad benefit information technology has to offer, it comes with a dark side also. Cyber security is subject to intrusion by various actors such as cyber criminals, hackers, and terrorists who are seeking to benefit from exploiting the weakness in cyber security with malicious intent. Some of the common methods used by the cyber criminals are phishing, malware, SQL injection, denial of service, man in the middle attack etc.

Background: This research paper is being done as part of a capstone research project on a recent trend in emerging technologies and innovation. This research paper is being prepared to be presented at Charles Sturt University.

Project aim : This paper will focus on the key challenges faced by cyber security and the impact of this on latest technologies. This paper will also try to find answer of five w’s in relation to cyber security: what are the different kinds of cyber attacks? Who are the actors behind the execution of these attacks? What are the methods used to implement those attacks? What are the underlying motivations behind those attacks? And finally, what are the consequences of those attacks?

Deliverables: After having analysed and highlighted on all the major security challenges and threats, the readers of this paper will be able to gain a clear and comprehensive understanding of the issues in cyber security. This is also hoped that this paper will be able to influence future researcher to find out the alternative to meet this challenges in cyber security.
