Fiction vs. Non-Fiction

Current literature surrounding resources used within the library and classrooms indicates a tension between non-fiction and fiction resources with dominance placed upon non-fiction texts (Mosle, 2012). From my personal experience, I have found that most classrooms will focus on explicit teaching of the key learning areas using non-fiction resources whereas fiction resources are used as ‘fill-in’ time or individual silent reading time. The only instance when fiction titles are used in explicit instruction is during guided reading in literacy centres in K-2. When approaching the use of these resources in the library and classroom context, they should be used equally across the key learning areas to embed knowledge in an engaging way as well as provide the information needed.
