Welcome & About Me
Hi everyone and welcome to my page!
My name is Gabby and I am currently working towards finishing my Masters of Information Studies specialising in Children’s Literature. I have recently become a Branch Librarian but for the past several years I worked as a library technician within a school library and I know that instilling the love of reading and all things literature is what I want to do with the rest of my life.
My main aim while transitioning from library technician to librarian is to experience different library environments to see how each operate. I think it is vital that we know how each contribute to how information is accessed in this day and age. How people connect with information has changed rapidly throughout the years and now more than ever information professionals are vital to the community. As my career progresses I would like focus on children’s literature and ensuring all children have access to books they can connect with and enjoy to help them find a love of reading.
I am a member of both the ALIA Children and Youth Services team and one of the founding members of the ALIA Graphic Novel and Comic group. By joining these groups it has allowed me to delve deeper into children’s literature and provided me with opportunities to speak to Australian authors and creators. As this is what I would like to do within my professional career it has provided a solid foundation for me to build my skills and knowledge.
Professional Networking Philosophy
The information sector is an ever changing ocean that is continually moving and shifting as new technologies become available and people find different ways to access information. As information professionals it is our job to stay current and continually develop our skills so we can best steer our clients in the right direction. Continual Professional Development is something that all information professional need to do as it is vital and, in my experience, I have gained something from every PD course I have undertaken.
Listening and learning from others is the greatest thing we can do in life as everyone is a bridge that can connect us to a different way of thinking or show us new idea. By not only undertaking professional development but networking within the information environment this can allow for greater connections across different levels. By attending conferences, I have met library professionals from across Australia all with different library experience. Through these connections it has allowed me to think about how I can transfer my skills as a library tech to a librarian and has given my opportunities such as joining the ALIA special group for Graphic Novels and Comic books.
Professional development and networking are something that I will continue to do throughout my career.
