Categories of Resources in School Libraries

It is hard to assess the most relevant categories of resources for schools today and in the future as schools are so different. Factors affecting the categories include whether the school is:

  • Rural, metropolitan, boarding or distance
  • State, Religious, Private or Independent
  • Primary, Central/Community or High School
  • Socio-Economic status
  • Facilities and funding

For the purpose of this we will outline the categories in a general manner.

    • Textbooks (curriculum designated)

    • Audio – inc. audio books
    • Online streaming
    • Smaller collections of Fiction books, increase in audio fiction books
    • Smaller collection of non-fiction books
    • Textbooks online (multiple subscriptions)
    • e-books (fiction and non-fiction)
    • Small collections of DVDs
    • Large collections of Audio books
    • Variety of Online streaming subscriptions
    • Overall increases in online research methods and accessing of online resources
    • New inventions of accessing resources, more direct access, heavy reliance on the Internet
