The THREE Principles of digital citizenship

The three categories of digital citizenship devices by Mark Ribble (2020) teaches digital users how to use technology. The Three principles (Figure 1) in conjunction with the 9 elements are used to create a framework that assists in the teaching and learning of digital citizenship.

The 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship

Ribble (2015) indicates that Digital citizenship is not a set of ironclad rules; rather, it is a way to conceptualize the challenges facing all technology users. The nine elements (Figure 2) developed by Ribble, for ISTE, are a starting point for preparing individuals to become card-carrying digital citizens (Ribble, 2015, p. 17).
