Charlene’s ITC174 Assessment 5

For an online digital learner it is ethically unacceptable to spread fake news.

In todays day and age, fake news is becoming one of the most common things to see on our online platforms. Anyone can hop online and publish any information they deem worthy with extraordinarily little worry for the consequences for themselves or others. By continuing to produce fake news people are becoming confused and do not know if what they are reading is real or not.  “The news industry must provide high-quality journalism in order to build public trust and correct fake news and disinformation without legitimizing them.”(West December 2017). People believe what they read online, coursing havoc with lies and misinformation, becoming dangerous to many. It is unacceptable to spread fake news online and disregard others’ lives.

One of the many groups of people who spread fake news online are scammers with agendas. “Shady operators are publishing fake online news stories designed to look like they’re from a trusted news source, such as NBC, CNN, Fox News, ESPN, People and US Weekly.”(Weisbaum 2019). These fake news site will then convince a small percentage of the public to give over bank details, buy new and amazing medical marvels and so much more. They use their words to convince you that you need this object in your life and show fake evidence to help support their claim. This can become dangerous to many, as the wrong medical drug scam can endanger the lives of large numbers of people, disregarding the consequences.

Another problem with having fake news be so accessible and easy to find is the impact it can have on students. “Alarming evidence that a large majority of students are not well prepared to investigate sources of information for their accuracy, relevance, and quality. And despite more than a decade’s worth of policy chatter about media literacy, whatever schools have been doing doesn’t appear to have been enough to inoculate students against “fake” news.”(Sawchuck 2019). By allowing this information to be so accessible to the public can impact the lives of many students. The work they find online does not always get checked and they can be swayed to believe what they read online to be true. In this case, it means that a student can depend their work on an article published by a fake source and not even know it, jeopardizing their future by accident. If this then leads them into failing it can impact their future entirely, making their lives difficult in many ways.

Age groups who are vulnerable without our help is the young and elder groups. Information found online can not always be correct, and these two age groups can find it extremely difficult to tell the difference. A study done by a group called The Conversation on 1000 kids found “Of further concern, our survey finds a large number of young Australians do not challenge the news they consume, even as they get older. For example, 46% of young people who get news stories from social media, say they give very little or no attention to the source of news stories found online”(Notley 2020). The elder generation struggle to keep up with this new age of technology, and also do not understand the difference in news sources. This is extremely unnerving as we have no idea what the younger generation believes and takes in off the social media. To say that they do not even question where they are getting their information from is alarming and can potentially become dangerous for their lives.

A large portion of the online platform of fake news is information on social media influencers. These are people in the public eye like celebrities, youtubers, models and bloggers. They represent brands and a large portion of their life is therefore shared online. Not only can the news be spreading lies about their lives and brands, they themselves can be unwittingly advertising fake news with brand deals. “Police and trading standards officials have told BBC News that social media influencers are unwittingly helping to fuel the trade in counterfeit goods. With their millions of followers, many of them get paid to promote clothing in their posts, but the authorities fear some may be advertising fakes.

”(Crawford 17 July?). They can also spread fake news by commenting on something without really knowing all the information, and with millions of people following them it can escalate. This can become dangerous to them by being in the public eye and making mistakes, making life harder.

In conclusion, fake news online can only benefit those who are publishing it. It is a dangerous form of manipulating people who are unwittingly believing what they read online. Some fake news can be hard to tell the difference, and only by checking our sources on reliability do we know who we can trust. Monitoring what we read and believe online is the first step to protecting our lives.

The Brilliance Of Minecraft

Making this video was not the easiest of tasks. Filming the screen recording for Minecraft’s gameplay was fun, however, everything after required quite a big of work.

I used Windows Movie Maker to merge my video clips together and add the sound. Music came from an online site called Bensound. With Bensound I found a great soundtrack called Slow Motion, that was remarkably similar to Minecraft’s original music, which I did not include in case of copyright problems. All sound is myself and allowed music.

The thumbnail video was a personal image from my gameplay.

Originally going into this I had over 30 minutes of recorded video and cutting this down to be under 5 minutes was hard. Then fitting my narration around was complicated. There was many things I had to cut out to make the video into the time frame needed. These included shots of different biomes, under water life and the caving systems.

Using Windows Movie Maker, I used animations to make the transitions between videos glide smoothly. Uploading said video to YouTube was time consuming and I did get worried in the end that it would not be up in time.

Podcast: Spreaker

Writing and producing this podcast was no easy task. To start, coming up with 650 words was a struggle. As much as I love accounting and can not wait to begin my course, 650 words was a lot to come up with.

Difficulties that I faced while recording the podcast were many. One of the problems was with me and my speech. I have a bit of a problem with speaking for to long and not dribbling everywhere.

I used Spreaker to make my podcast and until I learnt how to use the platform, I struggled. Putting music onto the track hard. Putting music and audio recording together was fun. I used an online loyalty free site to collect my music, it was an upbeat happy song. I could not find a song that would match accounting in sound, I do not think it was possible. At the end I added people clapping from the Spreaker app itself. I really hope it sounds well.

I got an image from Pixabay and then edited the image on my phone to add titles.

All in all I am very happy with how it all turned out and value this experience.

My Connecting Experience

Today has been a day of learning. I learnt that i need to connect online more and broaden my horizons. Through doing the online Connect Quiz i have learnt that i have many things to improve on. However, i also learnt i am confident in other aspects of online learning. As part of of personal learning environment i feel confident that i can find, understand and interpret new information when needed. I am confident i know where to find people with similar interests as me and communicate appropriately. I believe i understand the difference in synchronous and asynchronous online learning modes and am able to access live learning modes and tools at my disposal.

Connecting with other people and companies online is important to anyone trying to make a professional name for themselves. It shows initiative when reaching out to other people and proves you have connection skills that are able to help you improve your communication skills with a vast number of colleagues in society. How you present yourself online both in your private life and academic life leaves a mark. Anything you upload online or comments you make online leaves a footprint and can be found by anyone. By presenting a respective and clean online name you show employers why you would be a good choice for the future. However, by presenting a abhorrent online footprint, including on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and anything else, will show you are not what the employer is looking for. I believe i have a clean, respective and true online profile with everything i use. I am very aware of the importance of having a clean profile because i represent both my present employer and future employers.

Online groups i have joined have shown me the importance of connecting and learning on new platforms. Other people may have other opinions and knowledge, and through this new experience on various platforms i am now able to understood their opinions because of their assistance.

On Facebook i have connected with my peers by joining online groups connected to subjects i study at CSU. We discuss assignments coming up, tips and tricks to the subject and answer any questions each other have. This is helpful for when we need to know others opinions.

Through my online weekly lecture we have the opportunity to discus the weeks coursework and our imprints online.

There are now platforms out there to help connect job seekers with employers to fine suitable work and vice versa where employers can search for new employees through selection criteria. These platforms are becoming for promoted in our society as out digital advancement occurs. One of these platforms is Seek.

Using my LinkedIn profile i have connected with other students from my ITC174 class with CSU and learnt that we are all in this together. Professionals are harder to connect with.

Before now, i have never considered my online life as to have much significence. I never contemplated that by sharing a joke i laughed at could be unfunny to others. Now i see that everything online can be retrieved. That post you shared 3 years ago can come back to haunt you. Employers can look you up with a simple name search and find all they need to know about you from how you present yourself to others. In hind site, this can be either very good or very bad.

Connecting online with others has never been my strong suit. I need to learn to be better and achieve higher in these things.
