Assessment item 5 – Persuasive Blog Post

Unethical human activity is primarily responsible for a lack of privacy and safety on the internet

I agree with the above topic that unethical human activity is primarily responsible for the lack of privacy and safety on the internet. If someone is feeling unsafe on the internet it comes down to two issues, that they are either feeling like their privacy or their safety is at risk, this is due to the unethical behaviour that has taken place.

Privacy is defined as being ‘free from public attention’. (“Definition of privacy | Dictionary.com”, n.d.) This definition backs up my point in the fact that if this said information is supposedly free from other viewings than it all comes down to a person or persons unethical behaviour which breaks down this privacy wall. It is easy to see that unethical activity has a massive impact on people’s privacy and safety on the internet. Safety is defined as being ‘protected from danger or risk.’ (“Definition of safety | Dictionary.com”, n.d.) If somebody is trying to obtain another’s private information or details than it is proven that their digital safety has been compromised. Why has this been compromised? Because of somebody’s unethical human activity. Unethical is defined as not being ‘morally correct’. (“Definition of unethical | Dictionary.com”, n.d.) This once again proves my point that if you are unable to be morally correct then you are unethical. Once again, safety and privacy come down to trust. If that trust is compromised then issues arise, and it is those people who are unethical that break this trust.

I know numerous people who have now deleted all social media platforms as they fear for their digital safety because they have either been burnt by someone’s unethical behaviour or they have heard about another person experience. Amanda has shared her personal experience on ‘Mashable’ (Bryan, 2018) about how she was enjoying her social media platforms until she was hacked one day. Amanda has now deleted all social media due to this incident and says that she ‘will not be back as it was too hard of a process to recover all of her personal details.’ Amanda had no choice but to deactivate and delete her Facebook account due to the experience that she went through. It is this kind of behaviour that proves it is the safety and privacy that is compromised when somebody becomes unethical online.

It is well known that Facebook, Instagram and other platforms like these sell and share your private information to make a gain for themselves. This is unethical and has a massive weigh in on why people are deleting their social media platforms due to feeling unsafe on the internet. When researching about why people have deleted their social media. With social media increasing in popularity it has become easier for hackers to gain access into accounts and private information. This has become a massive issue as there are now younger kids beginning to use social media platforms such as ‘Facebook’, ‘Instagram’ or ‘Tiktok’ which being of a young age it is easier to not have your accounts as secure as they should be leading to a greater increase of being able to be hacked and having their private information taken.

An article from The Guardian called ‘Somebody to talk to’ (Palmer, 2001), talks about ‘the dangers of internet chatrooms’. (Palmer, 2001) It is stressed in this article how at-risk teenagers and young people are entering these chat rooms as they think that they are harmless as there is an expectation of safety and privacy on the internet. However, this all changes very quickly when unethical behaviour is thrown into the mix. When it comes to chat rooms the unethical behaviour is often different to unethical behaviour on other sites such as in chat rooms you can easily start a conversation with any aged person and pretend to be a certain age yourself. This becomes a massive problem for the kids that are underaged on this site that believe they are talking to someone their age, but in fact, they could be talking to someone 50 years older than them. For someone to go through an experience like this at such a young age, it can easily impact them for many years to come in regards to their digital trust as their safety was breached, which leads back to the agreed topic that it is the unethical behaviour that is primarily responsible for the lack and safety on the internet.

ITC174- Video Assessment 4

For this assessment I interviewed Marita to gain her perspective on her role and discuss what she believes is essential to be nurse. The platform used to create and edit this video was ‘iMovie’.  I really enjoyed playing around with ‘iMovie’ and getting to know the layout in a more advanced way than before. I enjoyed editing my clips and adding special effects such as the slide to a different clip to add a cinematic experience. It was a challenge to ensure that all clips moved in a smooth transition as well as ensuring that the music matched to the correct point that I wanted it to be in.

I also gained a greater knowledge of how ‘Youtube’  worked in the uploading process as well as learning how to compress a file when it is too large to upload. This assignment has been very beneficial to improve my knowledge and skills regarding the use of different platforms. This has been a challenging but rewarding assessment.

ITC174- Assessment 3 Podcast

Whilst creating the above podcast, I used the platform ‘iMovie’. I found some aspects of this task challenging as I was a beginner at using iMovie. However with a play around of the platform I quickly found that this platform was quite easy to navigate which really helped me to collaborate both a soundtrack and audio. In future if i have another podcast task I will definitely be using iMovie again.

ITC174- Reflective blog post

For my ‘connect’ quiz the outcome that I received was ‘Intrepid Intermediate.’

Living in the day and age that we do, having technology advancing every day, and living in a generation who turns to technology to be the forefront of assistance whether it be to talk to friends or family, connect professionally, or to find resources, I was rather surprised that my result came back as ‘intrepid intermediate.’ Being in a generation that is quite technology dependant I thought that my results would have shown as a higher level.  Following this result, it has made me more eager to delve deeper into the digital realm to be able to communicate, research to an increased level and to expand my knowledge.

This outcome has proven that whilst I am still in a mainstream category, there is still quite a lot to learn to achieve a higher level of digital literacy. Learning things such as the difference between synchronous versus asynchronous can then help to improve the way that we use technology to be able to communicate with others and achieve the results that we are looking to achieve in a quicker timeframe. For example, if I am wanting to connect professionally, I would now use an asynchronous platform such as LinkedIn. I was previously only using platforms such as email to communicate professionally with those in my team however I have learnt that if I use LinkedIn, I can now connect with those out of the normal circle of communication, such as those in different properties or levels in my organisation. Whist I was setting up my professional profile I have realised that I was missing out on so many communication platforms that I could have utilised professionally at work. Since learning about the synchronous verses, the asynchronous platforms, I can now identify what platform will perform and give the results for the desired task or communication I am trying to achieve.

To ensure that I have the best personal learning environment possible I will now be focusing on making sure that my I have a greater hold on my social media devices to ensure that I will be able to connect better with those around me whether that is professionally or personally. I believe that connecting online is incredibly important as this is a whole new platform to be able to connect and interact with those in your workplace, in your desired field of study or even as an everyday kind of resource.  If you could take up an opportunity to expand your knowledge and find further resources, why wouldn’t you take up this opportunity?  I also believe that it is very important to share our knowledge and tips with others to help improve our digital footprint collectively, this will then create a higher professional level of communication personally, through jobs and in the field of studying that you are interested in.

Now that I have this knowledge and skill set, I will continuously utilise this information to try and get to the highest level of digital literacy that I can achieve to improve personally and professionally.
