Referencing

Referencing at Melba Copland

At Melba Copland Secondary School, our main referencing style is Harvard Referencing.  Referencing (at the end of your document) and citing (within your document) is important to demonstrate your use and understanding of ideas and to acknowledge where the information in your assignments comes from.  It gives credibility to your ideas and arguments and demonstrates the diligence of your research.  This is known as academic integrity. The BSSS has strict guidelines about academic integrity and the consequences for not citing your information can be severe.

Referencing has formal and easy to follow guidelines. When you use these and make them a habit in your academic writing, it becomes quite easy.

If you are unsure how to create your reference list you might like to try a referencing generator.  If you do, please make sure that you still check the details to be sure they are correct.  You may still need to do your own in-text referencing depending on what you use.  One of the most popular referencing tools is Cite This For Me.  This link will take you to the Harvard version. Whatever tool you use, make sure to select one that uses the Harvard style which is standard for MCSS through Year 12.

Even if you are not sure about referencing, it is important that you start having a go. Don’t worry about making mistakes, they are opportunities to learn.
