Reflection:
This course aims to introduce students to deal with paper documents in different conditions such as infections, mold and dirt. I am able to learn how to use bind books, the structure of books and the use adhesive and paper. Moreover, I am able to learn methods in handling fragile papers, which allows me to utilize this knowledge in my workplace.
The reason for me to join this course is because when I began my career in librarianship, many books were torn or in poor condition, which were needed to weed for each year. In circulation counter, it is commonly found the return books with different problems that cause harm to the books’ shelf lives, so I want to learn more in book restoration and simple book repair.
This course can develop my ability to handle damage books and know more the characteristic of paper, which will impact the repair methods and materials. Besides, I am able to learn basic concepts about archive management and preservation. All actions should be reversible to minimize the damage to the documents, so we need to be careful when choosing conservation supplies, such as adhesive and paper. This knowledge is valuable for me in my workplace and also applicable to my future career development in collection handling.
I am working in the user service teams at the academic library. One of my job duties is to repair the damage books, so this course can help me to job done well. In this course, I learnt at least four bookbinding methods. Mr Lai mentioned that binding is fundamental to book restoration. We have to understand the binding structure of book before we conduct any repair works. I was able to make 4 books by hand with the aids of machines. With these hands-on practices, I am able to understand the binding procedures and the structure of books.
This course provided us opportunities to practice binding and repair skills and also introduce knowledge about conservation as well as the cultural and historical values of books and documents. I am more confident in repair damaged books and learnt the basic skills in book repair. Now I can repair the damaged books and learn relevant knowledge such as the fundamental elements of book repairing are water, paper, tools and adhesives. We need to use different adhesive for different purposes. For example, when we make the spine and cover of the book, we need to use thicker adhesive. However, when we perform restoration work, we need to use thinner adhesive. The thickness of the adhesive will also be affected by external factor, such as humidity and temperature. It strongly relays on practice and experience. The teacher tells us the important concept in conservation is our best to keep the books in its original status.
After attending this course, I will not use the adhesive tape to repair the books anymore. It is not a method to preserve paper documents as it may lead to irreversible damage. Librarians have a mission to preserve the library resources for use by further generation to fulfil the information needs. The print-materials are worth to keep as historical evidence. All information media should be also respected and maintained.
