The learning result of INF 206 for social networking to information professionals

After completed this subject, I learn more concept or term about social networking. For example, “a meme on the internet is used to describe a thought, idea, joke, or concept that’s widely shared online. It is typically an image with text above and below it, but can also come in video and link form” (Stec, 2020). The concept or terms about social networking are increasing. The reason is that information and communications technology (ICT) and network access arises and evolution. The global users interact with other user via social media. The result is that new online culture was created by them. And this impact also extent to everyone so we can see that more and more meme creation about different topic and country.

Before this course, I have not enough sense or knowledge about the impact of social networking. May be I did not realized that it can connect with informational professionals. I have to think of future for library field development and implication. “In developed countries like USA, UK, and Germany, the libraries are adopting new technologies for learning, research, and information to give the patron the best possible services” (Hussain, 2020).

In this information age, ICT and network access already becomes new trending. If I cannot hold this opportunity at this moment, in the future I will pay the more cost to follow the tail of era. As information professionals, how to adapt this change and consider more what we can do to let the libraries can play the role and keep our professional stance in the future.

In this course, I realized that Library 1.0 was replaced. The concept of Library 2.0 arises. Because the impact of ICT, it lead to web 2.0 concept arises and support it implementation.

In the past, librarian may not need to interact with user. Users did not easy to access information to fulfil their information needs so library becomes their first choice. In this periods (web 1.0), librarian is a provider and users are a receiver. They need us assist to access and find information. In Web 2.0 era, due to Information explosion and ICT gives user a great convenience. Mobile device and online network can provide more and fast information to user. User can find and access information via online, library is not an only one information provider. Google and Yahoo arise that give our user other choice. Information can access via online, the crisis for library is people also can share information and personal experience via social media (SM).

The using of social media is opportunity and threat for libraries and information organizations. Librarian has to change the mindset to fit in this era. Our mission and vision would use SM and ICT to achieve it. We have to interact with our user more than the past, what they need and wants. How to keep close linking is a great challenge for librarian. SM can help us to spread information and promote library resource and service to user. Besides, user also can use SM to express their opinion and share user experience to this platform. Like, subscribe and share becomes indicate to impact survive of library. People would reference this to consider may them click in the website. In this information age, librarian should keep linked with ICT, online networking and SM to address the environment of change.

Which tool and platforms were used and their relevance to as information professional

For learning this course, I already used Facebook, Google, YouTube and CSU library online resource. As an information professional, I may not familiar each SM or tool from online but I have to know what is the new trend and how to use. Skills for using ICT and SM are becoming librarian’s essential personal portfolio. The development of Information professional includes sense of SM and ICT. Different type of library also takes action to create their social media platform for approaching their current user and attract potential user. In the past library have not relevant experience to create their website and database. Many librarian leader still reject or ignore this change, this may no ICT supporting staff to address issue of technology. Some academic library still has not their own Instagram or Facebook page to promote their service and collections. Even if they has using SM but the using rate and click rate is so low. As information professional I have to learn and consider other social media platform’s advantage. In addition I can bring their successful experience and implement in my workplace. Informational professional not only have the knowledge of library field but also connect the trend of ICT. Social media using can bring benefit to library and user.

Issue about social networking in online environment

Information technology and online networking is to bring us benefit but some issue also cause to side effect even we can say disadvantage than the past. As information professional, we have responsibility and professional knowledge to educate our user.

Digital Inclusiveness and diversity is the benefit of ICT and online networking. Although social media platforms are everywhere, not all groups and individuals in society have equality online. When everyone enjoyed the benefit of information society, some people were blocked after the wall. “Most students from the disadvantaged background are not able to benefit from the advantages offered by social media” (Mphahlele et al., 2021, p.1). We can easy to access information and fulfil the information needs. We have high quality and enough network supporting. Did you feel that no network or the signal receive badly. This is impossible, we cannot accept it. Digital divide that mean some people have not enough online support and information technology device for accessing information via online. They cannot get the benefit from information society and stay at unfair environment.

In an era of ‘post-truth’ and ‘fake news’, Information or Digital Literacy can help us to select and using information correctly. “Information or Digital Literacy that mean people has enough ability to use technology to access and manage information, and also to process and assess the selected information” (Hernández-Martín et al., 2021, p.1). Misinformation refers to when people share unsubstantiated claims, rumors, and conspiracy theories that they do not recognize as untrue or inaccurate. Disinformation refers to when people intentionally share false information to propagate a certain point of view by deceiving audiences. In online settings, false information often spreads farther and faster than facts. Misinformation and Disinformation is to full in online environment, the reason it that people did not enough knowledge and ability to handle more and more information from online. Librarian can educate user how to collect, analyze and using information. They can access authority and accurate information source such as library database or collections.

Personal data Privacy and Security, Ethical use and Digital Identity also is our concerned issues. It will be a threat to impact reality world and our health.

Big data analyze becomes a method to research human behavior, user data would release their personal information, habit and interests. “User behavioral data can use to create a profile that follows user browses the web, where it is commoditized and used to predict and influence future behavior” (Marino, 2021). This will lead to the issue of personal data privacy. That information can bring great benefit to business firms or information organization. Most terrible result is that Big data analyze will give reason to business firms for control or change people behavior. Online Security also is a heat topic in our society. For example, the website of technology review shows us that “the metaverse has a groping problem already. A woman was sexually harassed on Meta’s VR social media platform. She’s not the first—and won’t be the last” (Technology Review, 2021, para. 1). In the future, how to make sure the user safety will be a challenge for the global government.

In information online environment, different online creation can search and use it but that may involve ethical use issue. “It is not possible for any regular social media user to have the level of understanding of copyright laws required to assess the legitimacy of the content-generative activities he or she undertakes” (Meese & Hagedorn, 2019, p.1). Copyright and intelligence property law is to protect author and their creation. How to define that infringe, some we just transfer the post, image and video but that may irregular behavior. As information professional, I have to be careful to avoid this issue. Online creation copyright too complex such the video creation may separate music owner and author owner. Besides, some user is to intend to infringe. We cannot ignore it. How to educate user did not infringe copyright and avoid danger area is our mission.

Digital Identity is our leaves a digital trail. When we are browse and use social media that would make a record in the device. Social media provider, online provider and hacker can access and collect our personal information for illegal using. “Users are not constantly aware of the distinction between data protection and online representation” (Feher, 2019, P.1). Many website would highlight that they will collect your data if you access their information or browse their resource. Not everyone realized that they should protect personal information. This will cause to more loss because release information.

Learning result from Blog

To the process of constructing and contributing to my online learning journal, I am learning more social networking knowledge form the different reading.  Newton et al. (2022) reported that Memes as Bonding Icons for Belonging in Donor-Conceived People. It became digital cultures and has been found to play an important role in collective identity formation (p. 1). I did get much of an impression of this topic. Memes can be found it on online and each social media. Before constructing my online learning journal, I would not connect it into social networking impact. Social networking content is very extensive and no stable. Digital culture and concept evolve form more and more change. Blog also is special experience for me. I seldom share my opinion on internet and interactive with other. I through the process of Blog create that bring me to do deep thought and increase different aspect of social media recognize.

The experience of assessment one to use in a social environment

The experience of conducting research and completing assessment one can give me the concept about social media strategy. A good planning can assist library address the crisis of wrong use social media and attract more users to increase the using rate. Although I may not opportunity to join this task in my workplace, in this assessment 1, I have to try for creating the planning for library social media platform. That is a good starting to considerate my information professions development in this information era. Many organizations have developed policies and/or guidelines to help employees use social technologies within the law and also in an ethical and professional manner. “As technology and the whole society are changing, the role of libraries is changing as well so libraries must respond to these trends” (Suchá et al., 2021, p.1). I think that is very important decision for librarian. Social media or social networking still has more issue should be handle it. I believe that social media will keep using and all libraries may get evolution again in the future. Virtual information environment may be our next station.

Blog 6: Thoughts for the future

The libraries and information organizations still have potential for the future. “The resources and services libraries offer to patrons create opportunities for learning, support literacy and education, and help shape the new ideas and perspectives that are central to a creative and innovative society, hence affirming the placement of libraries at the heart of sustainable development” (Hutchinson, 2021, P. 32). No matter how the era changed, education and educational materials is essential society advance prerequisite. No anything can replace it. I believe that no government would stop pushing education can cover their own country. Many government budget was input our society in order to keep society sustainable development. In this information age, knowledge would be our first priority and it also can bring benefits to us. Every national government is to pay attention to information technology development and input a great resource for keeping country competition. The mission of libraries and information organizations is to provide quality information to fulfill user information need. At the same time support education in school or university is one of our missions. In the future, the libraries and information organizations have to play the role for support society sustainable development. This is a great challenge for the libraries and information organizations.

As an information professional, no matter your work at the libraries or information organizations, the planning for your further action is our important career field development in the future. We can forecast that more and more information technology will arise and it may bring more impact to survive of libraries or information organizations. The expectation of user and the libraries or information organizations leader will not same on the past. They may require more active and sensitive to information technology or society trend librarians. Apart from the qualification of library field, future information professionals not only with skills for information technology but also combine both to use in the workplace and it may extend over the wall of library even virtual environment. Using of social media will be our daily job duty, how to create social media platforms and design it can more present well to user. The image of libraries, e-resource using rate or social media click rate is our concern matter. We will face competition from other outside organizations such as Google, Yahoo and Facebook. This is a fact that it may easily and convenience to access information than us but we are information professionals, high quality and authoritative information just can access via libraries.

Blog 5: Managing your digital identity

Social media (SM) using are becoming treading that covering the whole world. The impact of SM already becomes our essential tool. We can say that people also cannot leave SM or online network. This finding of article shown us that “the reason is that people make the decision would be based on the perceived risk or benefit associated with disclosure” (Adjei et al., 2020, p. 1). SM use leaves a digital trail that is not always well understood or managed. This may easy to lead to a series of online using safety issue. Digital identity management on social media that become a new issue. Some studies indicate that people are attracted to those who grant them rewards when people think about more benefits than risks are more likely to disclose personal information.

The SM of common using includes different online forum, twitter, Facebook and Instagram. In this information age, people interact with other via SM. All of us not only prefer to use SM everyday but also access and share information. When we use different SM via online, our online browsing history would be recorded in service server. Besides, every computer have own IP address. It can use to trace in the user location and online action. The issues of data privacy and online safety attracted the public concern to this. In addition, online free speech also is another issue. Everyone can share information or their opinion for some event. While you have mobile phone or other device can connect network, you can use SM in everywhere or every time. People can easy to use SM, misinformation and disinformation were found in every SM. Sometime, people may think that they just want share what they recognize correct information. Sometime, they just take advantage of information to earn benefits.

As an information professional, we have to follow the ethics of library field. SM can help us spread information and educate our user. We have to make sure providing quality and accurate information to user. And then we should not include personal bias and intend to get benefits through our duty and position. Besides, we would contact information about user. protect our user data privacy and did not release their information privacy.

Blog 4: Virtual and augmented reality

The advantage of virtual or augmented reality

The Libraries or information organization is to use virtual or augmented reality (VR/AR) that can bring some advantage and this advantage also can implement part of libraries mission. Dahya et al (2021) claimed that “Known socioeconomic inequities make access to information, education and technology in public libraries important for many people, especially those in low income settings” (Dahya et al., 2021, p. 1). Spreading information and support education is all of us have to achieve libraries mission. VR/AR are one of Information and communications technology (ICT). Hannah et al (2019) described that “virtual and augmented reality artifacts are products of knowledge generation processes that encourage users to explore new information through the virtual environment” (Hannah et al., 2019, p. 1). In the future, we can forecast that it will common used in the libraries or information organization. The VR/AR of technology would use virtual environment to user just like in person experience. This technology can recreate some place and history event. It can give them well user experience and attract more learning desire and action. The libraries collections were enriched by 3D dimension images. User also can through 3D dimension images product to use different collections from libraries.

The disadvantage of virtual or augmented reality

The disadvantage of use VR/AR technology, the libraries or information organizations may not enough budgets to afford the cost of VR/AR technology using. The libraries or information organizations are facing the stress of economic. They always under the university or government and personal organizations so they also rely on annual budget support from financial department of organization to operate their function. The libraries always are a budget cutting target. Actual libraries also need great financial support to pay the human resources, collection and device acquisition, the cost of database and server maintenance. Indeed VR/AR have a advantage for the libraries or information organizations but too expensive and VR/AR using are rely on familiarity with the technology. Although different business firms produce and research about VR/AR infrastructure for achieve this technology in different aspect such as education, gaming ET … al. Some libraries or information organizations just have limit budget so Google Cardboard is a low cost choice for them but the user experience is not be well. Samsung offers a more advanced option with its Gear VR. While more affordable, the experience on smartphones is less immersive compared to devices that have been designed specifically for VR. Navigating permissions and ownership of VR/AR content is an issue will lead to additional cost.  We will need to determine how to deal with objects that do not have clear developers or copyright holders.

They desire more and fast information via Information and communications technology (ICT) and network access.

In the past, Librarian can stay at library or office to wait the user come, we just prepare and know what library material we have and give it to our user. Fact-Checking the Crisis: COVID-19, Infodemics, and the Platformization of Truth

15 Nov 2021

By Cotter, K., DeCook, J. R., & Kanthawala, S.

This article told us that during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, various officials point out that the critical threat of false information. Author would use three major social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to discuss and analyses misinformation and disinformation. Infodemics and Information pollution were found in these social media platforms. There have many reasons in this article mentioned such as polarization, populism and fragmentation. In this situation, the three social media platforms use fact-checking to handle information pollution. They use artificial intelligence (AI) and input human resource to analysis and censorship all information in their platforms especially some political topic.Warning Labels is one of method to prevent misinformation and disinformation. They hope that can remind user and give choice to them how to make decision. The author opinion is these social media platforms did not prevent misinformation and disinformation arisen in online setting. They just told us that this information may not true, if you want to access these information, we have not responsibility for this.

In this information age, we can access a wide range of information via online, according to our interests and need to fulfil our information needs. This is a fact that for everyone because we already do that. And then we are to access information via different social media also be our mutual habit. Why we are seldom considered about is that information true? We can through Cotter article to browse different point of view to analyze and know more the Phenomenon of social media and society. I don’t agree the author point, indeed fact-checking is vital important proceeding but free speech also cannot be ignored. Everyone have right to access various information. What rule and criteria we can follow to comment what is correct and wrong. We cannot make sure that the three social media platforms staff of duty for censorship has absolute objective view. The information user has right to access and make decision what is true. For example, new coronavirus cluster at South Korean church which used saltwater spray to fight Covid-19 can found YouTube during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (South China Morning Post, 2020). User can learn from this this case, fact-checking is vital important proceeding. We can access too much information via online, everyone must be learning how to use and analyses information.
