Water Filtration System

3D Modelling

Our design is a water filtration system, that allows brackish water to be filtered without electricity.  Our system utilises membrane technology of four levels each time reducing the number of particles that pass through, all the way until there is clean pure water.

First the water gets poured into the centre of the system, following this a person turns the knob of the  system, forcing the water outwards with centrifugal force. The water then passes through each membrane increasing in purification each time.

The first level of membrane is Microfiltration which has a pore size of 0.1 micron this stage removers the microorganisms. The second level is Ultrafiltration this level has a pore size of 0.01 micron and removes larger particles and some viruses. The third is Nanofiltration this stage has a pore size of 0.001 micron and removes most organic molecules and nearly all viruses. Finally there is reverse osmosis, this final level has a pore size of approximately 0.0001 micron and this stage removes all the other organic molecules and viruses that passed through, making the water pure.

A key feature of our filtration system is that the membranes can be easily replaced every 2 years, or when required. This is more cost effective to replace the membrane instead of replacing the filter cartridge. This replacement process can be seen below.
