Primary school collection development process

While it may seem to the outside world that managing a school library may be a quiet, hushed little process, whereas in reality, it is a highly complex process that requires significant examination, evaluation, research and discussion. And therefore, also a great deal of expertise and time.

Below is a diagram that outlines the many facets of primary school collection development.

This diagram breaks down the steps required for primary school library collection management. Each of these steps may be either done by the teacher librarian alone, however they are more effective if done in discussion and consultation with the school principal, curriculum and pedagogy leaders, teachers and students.

In particular, the steps clockwise around the wheel from ‘Critical Evaluation’ to ‘Acquisition’, require collaboration and professional discussions. Acquisition should be in close discussion with teachers to ensure ‘buy in’ of expensive resources, and may later require further promotion to teaching staff.

Consider student voice for resources, such as student advisory groups, junior librarians, suggestion boxes, and surveys, so students can contribute to what’s in their library too.

This diagram was developed and customised with inspiration from university lecturer and researcher, Kay Oddone’s Library Collection Management teachings.
