Digital Citizenship Action

Digital citizenship skills is often the answer given to the question, “what do we need to teach children to survive in an online world?” After completing a module for ETL523, titled, ‘empowering digital citizenship action’ I would suggest that merely teaching these skills is insufficient.

What we, as educators, need to be doing is providing real world experiences to allow students to apply their digital citizenship skills in meaningful ways. Specifically, we need to be creating Digital Learning Environments (DLE’s) that engage and challenge students while allowing them to practice being a digital citizen in a safe way. Inevitably, when something is posted or shared which goes against the values and norms agreed upon, it can be used as a learning opportunity for all.
