OLJ Task 2: What is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is an interactive and rich user experience, easily accessible on multiple devices and platforms via a web browser, and with much of its content user-created or user-driven and highly shareable. Web 2.0 refers to websites that emphasize user-generated content, ease of use and a participating culture. Web 2.0 does not refer to a specific version of the Web, but rather a series of technological improvements which includes new features and functionality that was not available in the past. Web 2.0 is the second generation of the World Wide Web, which migrated from static websites where media was embedded to a more interactive dynamic web experience.

In Web 2.0, Rich Internet Application (RIA) technology allows the browser to deliver an experience very similar to that of a desktop application. Organisations can utilise these internet applications and features to provide services that promote participation and contribution.

Major Web 2.0 features that impact and influence technology within organisations include:

Blogs – Blogs allow organisations to post thoughts and updates about topics of interest and daily activities on the internet for their customers to view and comment on.

Social networking – Sites like Facebook and Instagram allow organisations to build and customize their own profiles and communicate with their customers.

Web applications – A broad range of new web applications make it possible for organisations to allow flexible work arrangements and locations as applications can be run directly in a Web browser.

Web 2.0 technologies provide a level of user interaction that has not been available in the past. Websites have become much more interconnected, generating online communities which is making it easier to share information. Because most Web 2.0 features are offered as free services, social networking sites like Facebook have grown at amazingly fast rates. As the sites continue to grow, more features are added, building off the technologies in place. So, while Web 2.0 may be a static label given to the new era of the Web, the actual technology continues to evolve and change.
