Both Bush (2015) and Robinson (2010) present logical ideas for organisation theory.
I relate to the notions presented by Robinson and tend to agree that schools are becoming more like factories, churning out students without consideration for their outcomes. Structurally, schools are still maintaining the status quo that has always been, despite the need for change due to the everchanging nature of society. Regarding society, I can resonate with Robinson’s thinking relating to ADHD and overstimulation.
Having said this, I believe Bush’s thinking is most relatable to the school environment. Bush references goals which could be likened to the school Strategic Improvement Plans – a document released every four years that outlines the improvement measures that need to be implemented to meet the school goals. As mentioned above, schools still follow the traditional structures with a Principal as head of the school, Assistant Principals as the next level, and classroom teachers following behind. Working in my current school, it is evident that culture and context play a crucial role in schools. In a low socio-economic area, education is undervalued and so it becomes the role of the teacher to advocate for education. Also, the context of the school means that student wellbeing becomes the focus of the school day with the curriculum second.
The school library could play a pivotal role in challenging the traditional structures in the school. With a teacher librarian who is willing to lead, the status of the library could be boosted. Also, the school library often plays a role in advocating for education through Book Week activities and book fairs. By encouraging parents into the school, they are able to see the value of education and hopefully build a better culture for their children.
