Given that information literacy is not specifically prescribed or clearly defined in the syllabus, I believe that it is not being embedded effectively. In my professional experience, it seems to be an add on that is left up to the individual teacher based upon their interest in the elements of information literacy.
I believe that the teacher librarian can play an integral role in the teaching of information literacy in primary schools. Firstly, the teacher librarian could explicitly teach the skills required for information literacy through library lessons. Giving students the skills to source and synthesise information equips them to further develop their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills. The teacher librarian could also upskill colleagues in the domain of information literacy and challenge them to adopt the elements within their classrooms.
Whilst I believe that the colleagues within my school understand the need for students to be able to access information, I do not believe that they see the benefits of explicitly teaching students information literacy skills. Our current teacher librarian focuses predominately on research skills and does not have a passion for the scope of information literacy. Further professional development in this area would be beneficial to all of our staff.
