Converting the Word draft to an IEEE jounal format is challenging as the 2-column template changes the formatting, especially when adding a figure or a table and even when resizing or adding table/figure labels.
To change from a 2-column format into a single column format (like a standard Word document), use the Layout -> Columns option to change the number of columns in a selected area:
In addition, sometimes there is no clear indication as to why text is moved into the second column and vice-versa. These can be hidden section breaks or other format setting that can cause this. To view and edit those hidden format settings, change into the format setting view and analyse/change these settings:
