After collecting several papers related to the collection of data from smartphones for driving performance, I found that there are multiple applications for intelligent transportation systems. For example, in the study Driver behaviour profiling using smartphone sensory data in a V2I environment is demonstrated that capturing the driving behaviour can categorise drivers along roads according to their safety levels, and the profiling algorithm is flexible to adapt to different events, this can provide targeted controls across multiple roads and supply warnings that may help reduce vehicular accidents considerably.

Across the papers, the names of profiles used to categorise the drivers vary, but they are in the range of very safe to very aggressive. Other papers introduce behaviours such as drunk behaviour, fatigue behaviour, and distracted behaviour. The last one, driver distraction style, is controversial in the area of using the smartphone to collect data because the use of smartphones is one of the major causes of distraction and accidents, some laws have surrounded this fact the use of mobile hand-held phones while driving.

I discovered a platform with an intriguing data collection method. Using smartphone applications and cutting-edge Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, www.oseven.io created an integrated system for the recording, collection, storage, evaluation, and visualisation of driving behaviour data. The paper Analysis of driver behavior through smartphone data: The case of mobile phone use while driving showed a concrete analysis of data collected, concluding that the use of smartphones is the most common cause of distraction. Therefore, this study suggested that car manufacturers must improve to find ways to contribute to the reduction of phone use. This paper also introduces another feature to further implementation of the detection of phone use while driving.

The previous gathered information brings me a wide range of applications and also shows an effort to improve the road safety through intelligent transport systems and mobile applications to analyse driving style.
