What Collection Development Policy?

After reading the material on CDP and reading the discussion posts on how many schools are not aware or use one, it’s clear that…

It looks like other people are in a similar boat as myself when it comes to the management of digital resources. I also work in a low to very low socio economic area as a classroom teacher, so the digital collection is antiquated and weak at the best of times. Because we don’t have a TL, our staff tend to curate their own resources to suit their own classroom and “dump” them on a deathly slow server if they feel like sharing.

Because there is no policy, no accountability and no visible form of leadership – the capacity of the school to effectively curate an use digital content is extremely limited. As a consequence, the school invests moreso on subscription based content essentially delegating the responsibility to classroom teachers to use the resources.

As someone with experience in leadership, I know that one of the biggest reasons why this school fails in the curation of digital content is the lack of clear vision and direction which is articulated in policy. By articulating the vision, outcomes and people of responsibility, the school would be able to effective navigate what should be one of the biggest areas of collection growth to match the needs of the students.
