Define

In the DEFINE stage, we:

  1. Ensure we understand the task
  2. Gather background knowledge
  3. Clarify our research question

Understand the task

  • Read the task assessment and rubric
  • What are the key words that I need to understand?

How can I improve my understanding of key words and the task?

HOT TIP: Try using Perplexity AI to paraphrase “external implications”

Sometimes paraphrasing a concept helps us better understand its meaning. Generative AI can be useful in the DEFINE stage of research as it can provide alternative key words, ideas or phrases in ways we might not have considered

Gather background knowledge to work out where you are headed

  • Clarify your research question
  • Reread your research question. Is it clear? Does it meet the requirement of your task and/or criterion in the rubric?

ACTIVITY CHECKPOINT: Do I understand the task? Can I explain it in my own language?

Think. Pair. Share: In your own words, turn to your neighbour and explain what is required of you within this task, what your research topic and question will be. Alternate and listen to your partner’s explanation.

Remember research is not linear

If you feel that you can have done all the steps in Define, you can move onto Locate. Remember that research is not a linear path, you can always loop back if in doubt.
