Project Title: Security challenges of Smart home IoT devices

Abstract

Currently, Internet of Things (IoT) devices very common in our day-to-day life, including industrial, professional, and domestic environments. Homes are converting to smart homes with Home Automation systems (HA) like smart appliances, locks, Surveillance cameras. Doorbells, and so on to make it safer, smarter, and automated. However, at the same time these IoT devices makes many major security risks to users like cyber criminals could easily exploited these devices due to the overlooked inbuilt security and privacy policies. Lack of technical support from the vendor for installation, maintenance, is another study area of this paper. further important security aspect is the physical security and safety of IoT devices and sensors, like theft and vandalism. There for this research focusing on the overview of HA devices physical as well as cyber security concerns and remedies. Finally, this paper concludes with a through discussion of above-mentioned open issues for future studies.

  1. Background

The assessment criteria lead me to do research on a suitable subject within my specialisation of Networking and System Administration. I decided to pick the topic for my research on Home Automation Systems IoT devices threats as I strongly believe this subject is relevant in this emerging internet-based technology world.

  1. Project aim/objective

The objective of this study is to influence researchers to spend their focus on this topic more in future as cyber security challenges as become one of the major concerns of every human being as no one can survive this world without the use of IoT devices.

  1. Project problem Domain

This research will contribute to the area of cyber security, cloud data security, measures to prevent physical attacks like theft. And the IoT manufacturers or researchers to be more responsible in future when they introduce new technology or devices.

  • Project Questions

What is Home Automation (HA) System?

How is HA related to Internet of Things (IoT)?

Security challenges in Smart home devices?

What are the suggested Countermeasures?

Any future recommendations?

  1. Deliverable Outcomes

This study will attempt to cover the different threat challenges of Installation, administration, and maintenance of IoT devices in Home Automation Systems (HA) and provide some recommendations for preventing such security problems.

Alignment of the project with course or specialisation:

I am currently studying for Master of Networking and System Administration, and this is my capstone subject. My previously completed subjects including Cloud Computing, Network Security, Hacking Counter measures are aligning with my chosen research topic.

Who am I?

Hi folks!

My name is Shamnad and I am currently undertaking Master of Networking and System Administration at Charles Sturt University. I have been working in the ICT industry for over 7 years as System Engineer. I am holding industry certifications of CCNA, MCITP, AZ-500.

My chosen research topic is “Security challenges of Smart home IoT devices “.  This research blog is for my capstone subject, Emerging Technologies and Innovation. Cyber security and Internet of Things (IoT) is closely related to my profession, , and it is a major issue in this digital era.
