“Every aspect of our school library profession builds on a quality school library collection. You can’t be a stellar school librarian without access to quality school library materials”
I realised that quality is absolutely essential in a collection. What is the purpose of my collection. I feel that entertainment is absolutely essential as most of us read fiction for entertainment or escape but the quality is far more important than the quantity.
Mona continues to mention that ‘teacher librarians must teach lessons that help learners successfully meet the six Shared Foundations of Inquire, Include, collaborate, curate, explore and engage in order for them to strive in a digital word’.
It is important that we have up to date collections to ensure this. You would hope that a digital collection is more up to date than traditional paper copies of books. I struggle with the concept o f weeding books but do you need 12 books that have the same information in them ?
Kerby states that the key components that influence collection development today include
* policies, practices and selection sources to evaluate, weed, and build dynamic and diverse school library collections
* methods and examples for analysing collection, curriculum and community needs
* strategies for showcasing the school library collection to learner
Kerby identifies some interesting points and reading further through her book would no doubt be beneficial to any school library.
Collection development must stay up to date and current with digital and printed publications, She infers that we need to select out collection for quality not quantity to showcase our curriculum and take into consideration our community and its diverse and changing needs.
I would like to look into her book further
