ETL504 Assessment 2: Part B

P-I-C your leadership battles… All the way to 21st century pedagogy!

Today’s world is such a busy place. Each day, we are constantly subjected to changes, circumstances and challenges that extend us beyond what we were capable of the previous day. It is much the same for a teacher librarian (TL) functioning within a school community. With the constantly evolving learning environment in response to the dynamic information landscape, TLs are required to adapt accordingly and facilitate development of 21st century teaching and learning practices. Thus, leading from the middle.

ETL501 Assessment 2: Critical reflection

Who C-A-I-R-S about library research guides?

The TL does!

As I progressed through this subject, I have developed greater understanding and insight into how technology can be used and applied to enhance student learning. In today’s information-driven and information-overloaded society, there is a great need to equip students with the appropriate skills and strategies to navigate through this ever-changing information environment. As an information specialist, the teacher librarian (TL) plays a crucial role in developing student information literacy skills and the ability to utilise digital technologies in developing problem-solving and critical thinking methods.

The ‘L’ word

Leadership. One word, yet a multifaceted definition. Add ‘Teacher Librarian (TL)’ to this word and it becomes a journey! Having only recently ‘converted’ to libraryland, it has been quite a steep learning curve about what it really means to be a TL and the various roles and responsibilities that come along with the territory. Now to the next chapter… TL as leader! Continue reading

OLJ 18: To infinity and beyond…

Whilst libraries and librarians are increasingly embracing technological developments and advancements, there remains a struggle in fully implementing these cutting-edge technologies for learning. Nonetheless, the potential for future directions within library services is incredibly vast and until recent years seemed like something out of a science fiction novel! Continue reading

OLJ 16: Real news is good news

In a socially networked society that is littered with ‘fake news’, misinformation and disinformation, authentic information is often hard to find. Although the terms have varied meanings (essentially, non-intentional versus intentional projection and spreading of false information (Iosifidis & Nicoli, 2019; Komendantova, 2021)), they are still closely related in resulting the same outcome – providing false information to the user/client/patron. I see. You see. We all see LITERACY!

The INFORMATION LITERACY ocean

Before embarking on my Teacher Librarian (TL) journey, the term ‘literacy’ seemed like a simple term with a simple definition. One that could be measured practically through testing methods (such as NAPLAN) to identify a student as having ‘high’ or ‘low’ literacy skills in reading and language conventions. Little did I know, that this basic definition is only a drop in the ocean of what literacy actually means. What information literacy (IL) means. Continue reading

Reflecting from home (RFH)

Delving deep into ETL503

This semester had been one with many challenges, much learning, and over the top resilience- building! Unlike any other learning/schooling period of my life, I’ve attempted to navigate through studying, working, parenting and ISO-lating… all at the same time! It has been quite challenging, yet rewarding and enriching in so many ways.

Looking back to the start of my Teacher Librarianship journey, as I scanned through the course overview in preparation for a enthusiastic and keen start to ETL503 – Resourcing the Curriculum, I remember my exact thinking that evening “Oh my gosh… What is all this stuff about collections and acquisition? What IS acquisition? Wasn’t that some kind of violent and torturous historical take-over to combat heresy?! Oh wait.. that’s inquisition!” Continue reading

We’re all in this together!

It has been a number of weeks since my fingers typed away in attempt to capture all my conscious workings, from reflections and thoughts to new found knowledge as a novice teacher librarian (TL). It has been a trying time indeed, both professionally and personally, integrating into this new way of life that has been enforced upon the whole world. Despite the challenges that we face today, constant reminders and encouraging slogans/themes relayed across global communities of diverse groups of people and cultures and professions are like silver linings to the dark COVID-19 pandemic cloud that has shrouded the world. It is uplifting and heartening to  truly know, indeed “we’re all in this together”!

My journey to ‘Library Land’

Before embarking on the journey to ‘Library Land’, I had been a secondary science teacher for almost a decade! Science was always my passion.. biological sciences in particular. I loved being in a role where I could inspire learning and share my love of science and the biological world with young people. I loved being in a role where I could observe these young learners be absolutely MIND-BLOWN as they viewed a cell through a microscope for the first time. I loved being the ‘gross science lady’ that didn’t mind poking and prodding a specimen during a dissection.. without gloves! I l LOVED teaching science until… Continue reading
