Whilst libraries and librarians are increasingly embracing technological developments and advancements, there remains a struggle in fully implementing these cutting-edge technologies for learning. Nonetheless, the potential for future directions within library services is incredibly vast and until recent years seemed like something out of a science fiction novel! Hussain (2020) explores in detail various applications of technological tools and and advancements within library services that function to better serve the end user. From specific tools/devices such as 3D printers, drones, robots, virtual and augmented reality technology, to entire systems such as user-focused interface and applications, digital-interface for printed books, library makerspaces and learning management systems (LMS). These tools and systems are designed to provide the user with the highest quality service possible in the most efficient of ways. Moreover, the broad use of digital innovations and the internet has allowed for extensive integration of library networking and services worldwide.
Despite the multifaceted applications and advantages of innovative technological advancements, there are potential negative impacts on information professionals. One such disadvantage is the immense pressure to follow innovative directions and utilise some or all the current technological tools to keep up with other organisations and society in general and be seen as “forward thinking” (Hussain, 2020).
Another negative impact on information professionals employing these technologies is the constant and regular maintenance, upgrading and testing of these tools/services. As with any electronic technology, constant changes within the IT field could at any time render hardware or software obsolete, thus, causing a disruption to the service provided to users. Consequently, it becomes the information specialist’s responsibility to ensure these tools are up to date and functioning optimally at all times.
In a global digital age, emerging technologies are integrated in all facets of life.
“Libraries and librarians are constructing a better world by experimenting with the latest technology for its patrons” (Hussain, 2020).
It is important for librarians to remember that experimenting and trying out new and creative ways to implement innovative technologies and design is crucial for providing the best possible services for the end user. Although it comes with some challenges, adapting new innovative tools will not only assist librarians in their roles and cut down on the time taken to carry out certain tasks, making their work more efficient, but also provide them with new skills and knowledge to maximise the services offered to their patrons. With all these digital advancements we have today, one can only imagine what libraries of the future would like!
