Learning Objects…

I can see that the creation and dissemination learning objects is going to be a central part of my practice. In my role as a teacher librarian, I have limited face to face time with students. As the only teacher librarian at my school, I want to support information literacy across all year levels and curriculum areas. I see that the way to do this is to create learning objects that students can use both independently and within the classroom. I have been inspired exploring the range of learning objects that are already created on sites such as https://www.esa.edu.au/resources/online-resources. I see my role is to sift through and disseminate bite sized learning objects to selected staff to inspire and support their teaching. I was particularly inspired by the possibilities of augmented reality https://www.digitaltechnologieshub.edu.au/docs/default-source/default-document-library/augmented-reality-at-home.pdf to support higher order thinking in my students. My school’s strategic plan has a focus on innovative pedagogy, and I feel like it is a part of my job to provide the tools to experiment with new ways of learning. With learning now occupying the online space, the development of meaningful and targeted learning objects seems more important than ever.

I think that the natural extension of this is to create webpages that have a curated selection of these learning objects that can support targeted curriculum areas. This would enable information literacy skills to be tied to the learning objects which would allow students to become self-sufficient learners. By embedding information literacy skills, students are provided with the tools to navigate the inquiry process independently and to experience what quality internet resources can be.
