Looking for a family adventure? Take a trip to Junee, NSW for the day and explore the globally recognised Junee Liquorice and Chocolate Factory, the Junee Roundhouse Railway Museum, or the most haunted house in Australia, Monte Cristo.
I myself travelled there on the 17th of May 2021, and briefly summarised my experience with the following stylistic amateur footage.
As you can tell, Monte Cristo Homestead has a rich history of violent deaths and paranormal sightings:
- A pregnant maid “fell” from the second floor and onto the concrete steps out the front.
- A servant boy was burned to death when he was too sickly to get out of his bed.
- The 18 month old daughter of the original family “fell” down the stairs.
- A man was shot by a local boy influenced by the movie ‘Psycho’.
- And a mentally disabled man was locked in chains for decades and taunted.
To name a few.
It was because of this, and the Ryans fixing up the historic homestead, that Junee was host to film crews as they filmed Muirhouse (2012). The cast and crew stayed in the house and reported several physical images of the original owners and builders of the house, Mr and Mrs Crawley.
The Ryans moved into the Homestead in the 60’s, after it had been left to the mercies of spray cans and weather. Reginald Ryan has since passed and can often be found sitting in his beloved carriages, while his widowed wife, Olive, is still living there and telling fascinating stories.
Tickets are $15 for adults, with family options and cheaper individual tickets for children, students, and concession.
And I can assure you, the chocolate from The Junee Liquorice and Chocolate Factory is to die for.
