Knowledge of Children’s Literature

I like to think that my knowledge of literature is average but constantly growing! I frequently browse the shelves of my library to just refresh myself with what we have on stock and read blurbs to get a taste of different things.

Some strategies that I use to increase my professional knowledge of children’s literature:

*CHAT CHAT CHAT!- I love to talk and I have found that I get great suggestions for new books for our collections or hidden gems we already have through lots of informal conversations. Students, library technicians, other staff members, even parents- given the chance will all relish in the opportunity to discuss great books!

*Magpies Magazine- I love this magazine and we get it delivered straight into my work pigeon hole. I think it’s such a fabulous resource for seeing what is out there in the literature world. The reviews they do are so thorough and informative.

*Professional networking events- Having attended a few SLAV and CBCA conferences this year I found these to be a fabulous way to increase my professional knowledge of children’s literature.

*Awards lists- These are another great resource for obtaining good quality literature.

*Bookstores- These are such a great resource and we are lucky enough to have a strong relationship with a local bookstore that is incredible. The staff there are beyond knowledgable and always give the best recommendations.

*Blogs, websites etc- I need to look at this more in 2019!
