School librarians: at risk of the endangered species list??

Conversations around the longevity in the teacher librarian profession and the cry that the job is soon to become extinct seem to be constantly swirling. For some school librarians their positions may soon become redundant but I don’t think that this is because of the job position, rather the job holder.

Much like other teacher positions in schools these days- if you’re underperforming and unwilling to upskill then you too could be the next to go. I wholeheartedly agree with Karen Bonanno when she emphasises the importance of looking at what we are doing to make ourselves invaluable to our school. What can we do that is unique to others and how can we support others in their teaching and learning. As Karen talked about borrowing a business tool from the book ‘Developing your Midas Touch’ I couldn’t help but think of another business term, KPI’s. If we were apply that to our own teaching librarian positions- how are we meeting our KPI’s?
