My professional journey began as a VET student in high school while studying woodwork/construction. I applied myself to these subjects and gained a love for using my hands and engaging in practical work. After high school, I pursued an apprenticeship in carpentry and became fully qualified. Although this journey had many ups and downs, I am now happy with the path chosen and the skills gained.
I was fortunate enough in my personal life to receive contracts playing rugby overseas and was able to apply my trade in the majority of the places traveled. Working as a carpenter and playing rugby was paired with coaching and helping develop co-workers’ skills. I received a lot of satisfaction from seeing the new skills and confidence in the people. This mentoring role unlocked my passion for teaching and assisting people’s growth; it also gave me confidence in my ability and allowed me to develop into a better tradesperson and a better player through my coaching for this experience.
On return to Australia, I pursued the next chapter of my professional journey and enrolled in a Bachelor of education (TAS) through CSU. I will attain VET accreditation to teach construction after my study.
Currently, I am working part-time as a workshop assistant within a high school in the TAS department. This job gives me an excellent insight into a teacher’s day-to-day life, from how they interact with students to the techniques and skills taught. This job has given me a great perspective on what to expect once i have completed my degree, cementing my goal to pursue my found passion.
In a way, I am going back to where my professional journey began but now, with the life experiences and skills to return the same guidance I received in my formative years.
