Online gaming can be played through a range of devices and can have a beneficial impact on a player’s ability to build intellectual, emotional, and interpersonal capabilities. There are online games where students can play with others and can help them build on their ability to work with others to complete a task. Online games may also lead to students being able to effectively problem solve, think creatively and enable them to work through potential emotional issues (Stopbullying.gov, 2021).

Although online games can have positive impacts on student learning, it can also lead to distractions and maybe even some issues. It is important that students know how to game appropriately and limit screen time to make sure that they can build positive online habits. 

This guide is built for students between Years 7 to 9 and will help them to realise how gaming is a Digital Citizenship issue which can impact their lives. Students can use this Digital Learning Environment to gain knowledge about the negative impacts of gaming and how to build positive online gaming habits.

This digital toolkit connects to student learning through the General Capabilities (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, n.d.) including skills such as Information and Communication Technology Capability, Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability and Ethical Understanding.
