For Parents

Your child’s gender development began in their infancy and will continue throughout their childhood and adolescence. The pre-teen years can be a difficult time as your child transitions into an adolescent. Your child will experience a lot of confusing emotions and feelings as their body starts to change physically and their personality continues to develop.

For pre-teens who feel as though they do not fit in with their peers or others of the same gender, this life stage can be even more confusing. At some point, your child will potentially question their sexuality, or they may have friends or peers who are questioning their sexuality. At Henrietta Library, we believe that it is important for your child to be able to find positive role-models in the books they are reading.

Our LGBT+ Reading Guide for Pre-Teens aims to provide your child with a variety of literature that is positive, affirming, and that will teach kindness and acceptance of oneself and others. We hope that by providing your child with books that reflect their current experiences and which may help to answer their questions or provide them with a positive role model, your child will develop a lifelong love of reading and also learn to love themselves in the process.
