When I think about collection development and collection management, the fiction section of the the Library springs to mind, and all I can imagine is carefully curating the most beautiful, engaging, thought-provoking and diverse range of fiction books imaginable. If the innermost part of my heart was a compass, this would be my North – this is where I naturally point towards, this is what I most want to do.
However, this is not all the job entails, and I know I still have so much to learn about how to be a Librarian. I am aware that my strength lies in fiction and I will need to consider how to best manage and develop a relevant and contemporary non-fiction section, which must surely be an ongoing problem in a high school Library where the students use the internet for research, almost invariably. I am also aware that I need to consider not only the curriculum requirements in terms of the units and modules studied at my school, but also the general capabilities of the Australian Curriculum. I know I will need to be adaptable to account for new technological advances, and explore online accessible resources.
I have a lot to learn, but I’m here to learn it and I’m excited about what will come next.
