Discussion Forum 4 Activity – Subject Heading Lists

Discussion Forum

I conducted a subject search using the term origami in the Library of Congress (LC) catalogue, with the first result was providing 451 results. Scrolling down further through the initial results list provided over 30 heading options with subdivisions, including date range subdivisions and others including Origami – Handbooks, manuals, etc., Origami – Japan – History, Origami – Mathematics – Periodicals. A few results I was particularly curious about, one of which was Origami cootie catchers (See: Cootie catchers). I clicked through to the particular resources on offer, but still had no idea what a ‘cootie catcher’ was – a cover image for these books would have been helpful here. I then jumped onto google to search cootie catcher and discovered it is what I refer to as a chatterbox (other reference name includes: fortune teller). Interesting, returning to the LC catalogue and conducting a search using chatterbox as the key word did not provide any relevant results.

Switching over to do a subject search in the SCIS catalogue, only 6 results were provided – one ScOT heading, one single-concept SCIS heading, and then the remaining four headings had subdivisions, including Origami – Poetry, Origami – Fiction, Origami – Drama and Origami – Mathematical Aspects. Two of these SCIS record subdivisions were identical in the LC Catalogue, one was a slight variation (Mathematical Aspects instead of Mathematics) and Origami – Drama was absent from LC Catalogue.
