In this learning scenario, the teacher librarian has deemed it necessary that changes be made to the collection; with a complete re-categorisation that moves away from alphabetical organisation, to genrefication of the fiction collection. In relation to this task, I am approaching the scenario with the consideration that there is underlying conflict – with the long-serving library assistant (LA) opposed to the idea of the proposed change.
The conflict in this situation would need to be addressed. If it is not and the teacher librarian (TL) begins an undertaking of the change process, then it could cause irreparable damage to the working relationship of the TL and LA. I think the most appropriate leadership style that the TL should adopt in this situation is that of transformational leader, whereby strategic planning is important to improve the performance of the organisation, through team-building and collaboration. With this leadership style, relationships are the main priority.
In this situation, communication is key. Having a challenging conversation with the LAA allows grievances to be aired. Through active listening, the TL can ascertain a better understanding of the LA’s underlying concerns. Maybe she sees the changing of the collection as a complete waste of time. Maybe she doesn’t want to ‘re-do’ her many hours of work in adding the resources to the collection in the first place. Maybe she doesn’t realise that there is an issue at all. The TL won’t know unless a conversation is had.
It is important to acknowledge the LA’s concerns – whatever they may be. These concerns may be valid; and collaboratively, the TL and LA may be able to brainstorm alternative solutions to the problem that might be more effective. Instead of a complete re-classification, maybe the collection requires a thorough weed, with an injection of newer, more engaging titles. Maybe, certain titles and collections need better promotion by the library. It is through addressing any concerns and dealing with conflict, that all parties involved can move towards a more productive working relationship.
