The Importance of Understanding Information Resource Description

Importance of Cataloging

Most schools (such as my own NSW Department of Education primary school), use SCIS for their catalogue record data. It is important to recognise that although teacher librarians (generally) don’t create this metadata utilised in library systems (such as Oliver), they need to have a comprehensive understanding of information resource description.

Rowe (2022, Module 1) outlines a number of reasons why this is important. Firstly, they must have the knowledge required to recognise the record components and that they are being correctly integrated into the cataloguing system. This knowledge also helps to make the record more contextually relevant, with the addition of or change of certain elements in order for it to more effectively meet the needs of local users.

The teacher librarian is also able to provide relevant feedback to the cataloguing service in order to ensure the most accurate and user-friendly metadata is provided. And finally, having this knowledge is essential in the teacher librarian being able to create their own catalogue records with accuracy and integrity, for locally relevant resources, such as year books or desired websites, for example.
