Reflecting on module 2, Developing Collections, I couldn’t help not thinking about experiences in one of the past school libraries in a school I had worked in, particularly at Xavier College Melbourne. At this school, I was a Head of Department, not a member of the Library staff. Our head librarian, Judy Wilkes was very proactive in having the teachers and the heads of department participate in the building of resources in curriculum areas. Each semester, the Heads of Department and the VCE subject teachers would create lists of recommended resources for students. This was built into the subject guide area on the library web page (as seen below). All department heads worked collaboratively with the library staff and this was an ongoing and evolving process.
The Brennan Library takes a learner-centered approach to building their collections, working collaboratively with teachers and curriculum leaders as well as students (Hughes-Hassell, S., & Mancall, J. C. 2005). Ultimately this collaborative approach enables the library to effectively address the learning needs of the student and focus on the resources that the students need for their assessments.
