Making Music…

Frank Hardcastle

Frank Hardcastle is on the Case!  An animation highlighting the effects of illegal music downloads.  This ia a cartoon with a big message, one that students of all ages can understand and even relate.  Most people love music, students love to include music into their presentations, particularly powerpoint or iMovie.  This clip provides insight into the damage piracy has on the music industry.  Students are unable to conceptualise concepts, such as this,m if they cannot relate to the context.  Frank Hardcase is a bit goofy and silly so will appeal to the students I teach.  With this unusual, if not ‘daggy’, graphics, students will generate an opinion and be able to talk about the content which will more likely leave an impression.

By incorporating Frank into lessons regarding copyright permissions and illegal downloading students can be motivated to create their own animation on permissions generating an invigorated knowledge of ethical use of other people’s work.  As I teach primary aged students I believe it is important to cultivate ethical behaviour in future generations.  The more students are engaged with a topic the more likely they will retain, what better way then to get them ‘Tuned In’ with Frank Hardcastle to the ‘Go Further’ in an inquiry unit to investigate illegal download and create their own public service announcement.

APRA Licence

As I build my knowledge of Copyright permission, in the school context, I am finding myself both enthralled and overwhelmed by the information I am discovering.  I also need to acknowledge I have not been the best practitioner of copyright law and am somewhat ashamed.  However, this is motivating me to ensure my staff are more in the know and there are ‘post it’ notes all over the place with brainstorming ideas of how better to improve teacher knowledge in regards to copyright licencing in schools.  For example, a colleague and I are preparing a Quick Reference Card for staff to have at the fingertips, collaborating with my principal to present information to staff and provide updated information for easy reference.

I chose the APRA Licence, with the Music Specialist and Choir Teachers at my school in mind.  There is clarification, for me, about the use of music in schools that I would like to promote within our school and curriculum.

Something else to think about….
