Hmmmmm…. Information Literacy, some more.

I have felt that I, in the context of my role in my school, have a lot to learn about Information Literacy (IL) and how it is implemented within my lessons and across the whole school.  Ideas of creating a scope and sequence for Inquiry and Information Literacy often cross my mind, but that is a job for a team not just one person.

From the readings I have taken note of a more consolidated idea of what I need to do with IL.  Let me preface my thinking with the knowledge that this i quite possibly going to change or evolve over time.  In order to implement the best practise of teaching, and learning, of IL I need to work towards ensuring the following things happen in my school, across grades and curriculum.

  • Integrate IL skills into Inquiry Units and curriculum.
  • Collaborate with classroom staff, and Executive to ensure implementation of these skills are consistent
  • The focus if IL has relevance to the students, content being taught and the modes the skills are being used.

All of this should be kept in mind regardless of the stage that the students, or teachers are achieving.

Working together,with staff and the curriculum, can only be of a positive benefit to developing lifelong learning and the students’ skills.  There is a call for Deeper Information Literacy skills to meet the demanding nature of the Information world.  Alongside the students, we can teach them to identify, locate, organise, present, evaluate and use information.  This will deepen their understanding, expand their knowledge and empower them to become critical thinkers.

For us as TLs, and for students, we need to deepen our IL skills with the ever changing digital and information age.   To gain further knowledge of what we read, experience and see we must reflect throughout the IL process.  I, for one, have been a reluctant to add physical reflection to my practice.  I do see it’s benefit, and am slowly overcoming my fear to express my thoughts in writing.  Although, in the past my reflections have not been seen, I often share my thoughts through conversation and practicing in my teaching.  That being said, the practice of actually writing down your thoughts certainly does allow for a deeper expression of our knowledge.  It may spark debate, questioning or even criticism but that is how we experience global ideas and grow as learners.

  1. Writing down your thoughts is really working! I was really immersed in this read, smiling to myself, and then got to the hashtag! I hope it was me who for once was right (doesn’t happen often)! Good job!
