Diversity

For my last activity and post, I looked at a vlog released by the New York Library Association on how to build a diverse and inclusive Young Adult collection. The vlog webinar includes a comprehensive reading guide which provides some wonderful examples of works that could be included into a diverse and inclusive young adult collection.

Young People’s Book Awards

This week I conducted a book review for a Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize 2020 shortlisted book. The shortlisted books are selected by a panel of adult authors (updated every year), and the winner is chosen from a panel of children. Astrophysics for young people in a hurry (2019) by celebrated author Neil deGrasse Tyson is a great book for young poeple (and adults) to learn about the history of the Earth and the universe.

Digital materials/resources and Emerging Technologies

In this week’s post I look at digital materials/resources and emerging technologies by creating a reading guide blog for young adults. “The creation of a literature blog … offers multiple benefits, as it develops literacy, communicative and digital skills” (Neira-Pineiro, 2014, p 555).

Censorship

This week I explored censorship and silencing in children’s literature. I found the difference between being silent and being silenced interesting, as “not everyone who is silent is necessarily silenced” (Joosen, 2020, p 112) and that by silencing (censoring) authors we take away voices and topics for children’s literature.
