Modules 2a and 2b in ETL402 have been some of my favourite modules of the MEd so far. It truly makes me feel like a real librarian just reading through them! I am surprised by how much I thought I knew before coming into these modules and realising there was much more to learn.
Module 2a has provided me with great insight into the diversity of literature forms. Working in a primary library, the obvious picture books and verse novels come to mind but I did not realise how many more there actually were – even with them being in my own library! A stand out form for me was the sophisticated picture books. Being a teacher on stage three for many years before embarking on my TL journey, I knew picture books could be readily used in upper primary. I did not know they were a form themselves and as a result, I have started creating an entire new section of my library dedicated to sophisticated picture books. My hope is that by creating this new section, access to the literature is made easier, not just for the children, but also the teachers!
The array of genres mentioned throughout module 2b was eye opening. Of course, coming into the TL role I had a solid background knowledge on fiction v non-fiction, as well as more common genres such as horror, humour, etc. but I did not realise how many more genres are out there! Focussing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander literature for my 1st assignment was really helpful in developing my understanding of that particular genre. As a result, I have now created a section dedicated to those books. I am still in two minds about the whole genrefication debate but this module has further opened my eyes as to the advantages and disadvantages of doing so.
Module 2a and 2b were great at building 101 TL knowledge. I have enjoyed how applicable they have been to my current library and it has now sparked a further desire in me and curating my collections.
