The TL as a Leader

Having worked through modules 5 and 6 and assessment 2, it has become clear to me that the TL leads. Literacy seems like the most obvious area in which the TL would lead, but it has become apparent to me that this isn’t the case; the TL leads across all curriculum areas. One stand out point has been that the TL leads the integration of the general capabilities, skills and cross-curriculum priorities, all of which are embedded throughout all teaching and learning programs. Thus, the TL really does have their toes dipped in each key learning area.

Module 6, my favourite of the semester, was very informative regarding further roles the TL plays. Promoting the library as a community, being an information resource expert and manager, and a curriculum designer are all key roles of the TL’s leadership from the middle. It can be easy to think that the TL is only responsible for ordering and accessing literature and making that available to students, but ETL504 has shown me that it is way more than this. It actually excites me that I get to play such a large part in the whole school community. I get to be across all curriculum areas and all stages.

A final point that stood out to me in these modules was the TL as a leader in technology. Whether your library space is well-equipped with physical devices, or you are working towards integrating more ICT, the TL is a leader in how that technology is used to meet 21st Century learning agenda. They may not know everything about each piece of technology, but they do know what is out there, what is effective, what is engaging, and what works best!
